Turley Brothers Contractors designed and constructed this late Art Deco Style building in 1937 for Mr. & Mrs. Alex Gusola. The Gusola's operated the "Nanaimo Smoke Shop" from this location for many years. This three storey 6000 sf building was completely reconstructed in 2007 by Tectonica Management Inc. The interior was stripped down to base structural components and rebuilt using new materials throughout including replacement of the plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems. A comprehensive seismic upgrade was also completed. The building now houses the french bakery "Mon Petit Choux" on the main floor, a gallery space located on the lower level is accessed from the Wharf Street entrance located across from Diana Krall Plaza and three residential units are located on the upper floor. This building sits on the corner of Commercial and Wharf Streets and is listed on the city's heritage registry. Rich in heritage, Commercial Street won the "Best Street in Canada" designation.
